The third generation of BMW 3 series is based on E36 platform. A range of compact executive cars of the German manufacturer are built on it in the period from 1990 to 2000.
BMW M3 E46 is a generation of the model, which is in production from 2000 to 2006. It offers two modifications of the engine. First one is 3.2-litre petrol motor, generating 343hp at 7900rpm and 365Nm torque at 4900rpm. It is used for both coupe and convertible M3-s. The second engine is CSL 3,2-litre gasoline powerplant, that generates 360hp at 7900rpm and 370Nm torque at 4900rpm. It is available only in combination with coupe body type of the vehicle for the period 2003-2006.
BMW creates a high-performance version of every generation of the 3 Series. These versions form the M3 line-up. All M3 models are developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH.
