Mercedes-Benz GLA classifies as a subcompact luxury crossover SUV. It is currently (as of 2021) the smallest SUV option, that the Mercedes-Benz brand offers on the market, as its name also suggests, where GL stands for Geländewagen ("off-road vehicle" in German) and A indicates its class in the Mercedes-Benz range - in this case, the smallest or A-Class.
As an SUV, Mercedes-Benz GLA is, indeed, suitable for some rough terrains and light off-roading. 4MATIC variants, in particular, are equipped with additional features that increase their off-road capabilities, such as additional driving programs, a downhill driving assist function, and in more recent vehicles - a special light function for off-road driving.
AMG version of the Mercedes-Benz GLA is different from the standard in both its design details and some technical characteristics. It uses a different sports suspension, a higher-performance braking system, and a speed-sensitive sports steering. In terms of exterior design, some distinctive for the AMG features are its light-alloy wheels, front apron with front splitter and front grille, both in matt titanium grey, 'TURBO AMG' lettering, and rectangular chrome-plated tailpipe trim at the twin tailpipes.
A major part of surveys on reliability suggest that the Mercedes-Benz GLA is a dependable choice for a vehicle. Issues such as oil leaks, camshaft failure, and airbag faults have been reported but are quite uncommon. In terms of safety, the model features plenty of driver-assistance technologies, both as standard and as options. Owners also describe the GLA as enjoyable to drive and of good build quality.
Mercedes-Benz GLA is often described as practical and more economical, compared to other options in the luxury SUV segment. It is still, however, the smallest SUV offered by the brand, so it may not be suitable for larger families, as rear seat space and boot space are likely to be insufficient.
